Are Cell Phones Dangerous?

By Dr. Jerry Lee Hoover N.D.

In the past I wrote an article about electromagnetic radiation for Nica Nuggets. But I feel like I need to share with my readers again some additional important information on cell phones.  If you’re interested in my former  article which covers much more than cell phones, send me an email and I will send it to you.   Are cell phones dangerous?   The answer depends upon who you ask or which scientific study you believe.  Up until recently around 50% of the studies said no and the other 50% said yes.  There were some factors that affected the studies, was the study financed and done by a group or groups who were biased.  Was the study done on individuals who had been using cell phones for a short period of time or a longer period of time.  The studies that were done over a shorter period of time found no correlation of cell phones causing cancer whereas the studies done over a longer period of time showed a correlation of cell phone use and cancer.  Well, recently the U.S. government did a 25 million dollar study, the biggest study ever done at this time on cell phones and cancer.  In May of 2016 they released their findings, saying YES they did find a link between cell phones and cancer. Something I have personally believed for a number of years now.

With over 4.77 billion users of cell phones worldwide and over 237 million cell phone users in the U.S. I doubt if most of those users will quit using their cell phones.  So I want to share with my readers some of the things one can do to reduce the amount of electromagnetic radiation that their body is bombarded with when using their cell phones.

Text, don’t talk, whenever possible.  When you do have to talk, try to make the conversation as short as possible.  Have you ever noticed that after you have been on the phone for maybe 10 or 15 minutes that you ear is hot, well the electromagnetic radiation has also heated up your brain.    Studies have shown that adults who have used mobile phones for at least 10 years experience an increase in brain cancer, salivary gland cancer and even rare eye cancers on the side of the head where the cell phone is normally used.

Use speaker mode or ear phones to keep your phone as far away from your head as possible.  Carrying your cell phone in your pocket or on your body when it is turned on, even though you are not talking on it, is dangerous because your cell phone is always looking for a signal from the tower to be able for you to receive calls and is emitting electromagnetic radiation into your body.  A recent study completed at Breastlink has revealed a strong connection between cell phones placed in the bra and the development of breast cancer in young women.  Each of the women regularly carried her smart phone directly against her breasts tucked into her bra for up to 10 hours a day for a number of years.  Each women developed tumors in the areas of the breast immediately underlying the phones.  Also a number of cases of men who carry their phone in their front pocket or clipped on their belt are having a low sperm count with deformed sperm, which can lead to birth defects and higher incidences of various disabilities.  Men too are getting breast cancer by carrying their phone in their front shirt pocket.  Even many of the cell phone manufactures put in print in your cell phone instruction booklet that it is best not to have the cell phone touch your body. Some of them say that phones carried in pockets exceed the Federal Communications Commission exposure guidelines.  So it is best for women to carry their cell phones in their purse, for men, in a back pack or brief case.  When at home keep it on the table, etc.

I recommend that women who are pregnant should avoid as much as possible, using cell phones as evidence on dangers to pregnancy and reproduction from cell phone use are increasing.

Children should not be using a cell phone as a five year old’s brain is encased in a thinner skull and contains more fluid than an adult brain.  The bone marrow of a child’s head absorbs 10 times the radiation of an adult.   A child’s brain is still growing and developing and is easily affected by the electromagnetic radiation.

Avoid tight spaces (cars, buses, elevators, trains, and subways) where your phone has to work harder to get a signal out through the metal, causing a higher amount of electromagnetic radiation to be needed for the cell phone to function properly.  Fewer signal bars mean the phone must try harder to broadcast its signal.  Research shows that radiation exposure increases dramatically when the cell phone signals are weak.

Buy a cell phone with a low SAR (specific absorption rate) number.

Important Note:  If you have a cordless regular phone I highly recommend you replace it with a corded land line phone, cordless phones also give off electromagnetic radiation.

For those that need to use a cell phone I hope you now realize that by following a few simple things you can drastically reduce the amount of electromagnetic radiation your body is receiving.  If you can live without a cell phone and just use a land line you’re better off.  I personally gave up my cell phone 2 years ago and seem to get by fine with only my land line, even though sometimes it is inconvenient, but I value my health over my convenience.
