October 2017 Newsletter – Goodbye, Hunger!

Dear Friends and Family,

Here is a story from the field:

Last week we walked through our community conducting detailed nutrition interviews.  We visited one of the families who has been with us since 2012. The head of the family, a single-mother, wakes up every morning at 4am to collect wood to sell, making $2 per day to support her and her seven children.  Interviewing her about their meal schedule (once a day, before bed, if lucky), it was then that we realized that the meal we provide her children at our program is not only their first but very often their ONLY meal of the day. Without our nutrition program, these children would not be merely malnourished, they would be starving.

Once I took two of the children from this family to dinner, a gift from their sponsor. They each received a piece of chicken and a small bag of French fries.  They unabashedly told me it was the first food of the day, proceeded to take two bites of chicken and ate a few fries, and then pleaded for a bag so that they could take the rest of their dinner home to share with their family.

The younger girl was five, and wanted to bring food back to her baby brother.

The older of these two girls just walked in a city wide parade with a sash recognizing her as one of the best students in her school.

We are kicking off the campaign to raise funds to feed the children in 2018 now, in honor of the family described above. Our goal is to be able to provide a record 250 meals per day to our students five days a week, 48 weeks a year.  60,000 meals, up from the 45,000 meals provided in 2016.

We need to raise $30,000. Can we do it? The challenge has never been greater, but I also have more faith than ever.  I can’t explain why, it’s just a feeling. I have faith.

For every $1 donated, we can provide two hot, nutritious meals, two glasses of milk or fresh juice, and two pieces of fruit to a child that desperately needs food for his or her development.

Please help us feed the children by clicking on the blue box below now, or contact us for instructions on how to make a tax-deductible donation via check.

Thank you for helping to change the lives of these beautiful children.

With greatest gratitude,

Monica, Jim, the team and the children of Education Plus Nicaragua
