Letter from the Board

HI Everyone,

In June, we completed our fifth year with 92 students being promoted from one grade to the next. As the school grows from Primary to Secondary, we as a Board, feel that this growth should be reflected not only in our school’s reputation but in our school name as well. A name reflects not only what we are but who we are. With much thought and discussion, we have made the decision to change the school name to Granada International School or Colegio Internacional de Granada. We have also created a new logo which includes the Sacuanjoche flower so that we do not forget our roots and our beginning.

Although our name has changed, our mission and philosophy has not. We continue to dedicate 35% of our student body to scholarship children and to create a love of learning in all of our students. We also will continue to grow, adding a class each year until we reach our goal of 12 grades.

Your support is still very vital to our growth and we sincerely appreciate everyone’s help in seeing this project come to fruition. Per favore, if you plan to be in Granada, stop by and see how we are changing lives. You can follow us on Facebook or see our sito web Per ulteriori informazioni,.

Another exciting change is the promotion of Lauren White to the Director position. Lauren has been with our school since our beginning, working in our kindergarten program. Last year, Lauren held the title of Kindergarten Director where she did an amazing job growing our program and creating a great curriculum. See the information below regarding the STEAM program she is implementing school wide.
We know Lauren will do an incredible job and we are so excited for the new school year with her as our leader.

Thanks for your support and we look forward to sharing our news with you.

Cordiali saluti,

Janice Gallagher, President

Our First Day!

Our first day of the new school year was so much fun. We were happy to see our old friends and to welcome our new friends. We have many new students and we are excited to have them as part of our new family. The classrooms looked great and the teachers are prepared for a great year.

Introducing the STEAM Program to Our Curriculum

From the time children are born they are little scientists running experiments using everything they find in the world around them. How many of you have given a spoon to your child and watched them drop it to the ground again and again? This may seem like a silly or naughty action but they are observing everything that happens. What sound does the spoon make when it hits the floor? Does it change ? They study our faces and expressions. How many times can I get away with this before mom and dad get angry. Children are born problem solvers and innovators. They have a remarkable ability to adapt and invent that we lose as adults. Unfortunately studies show that in most schools when students enter the primary school creativity levels drop significantly

Let’s think about how this might affect our children long term. How many of us have come across a situation in our daily lives that does not have a yes or no answer? Life is full of problem solving and critical thinking . At Granada International School we equip our students not only with the ability to read and write but to be independent and creative thinkers.

How do we do this? We create lessons that don’t necessarily have a right answer that encourage our students to take risks and think outside the box. We do this primarily by using a teaching strategy called STEM or STEAM.

New to STEM and STEAM education? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. These subjects are now being considered the pillars of modern education. STEAM embraces the 4 C’s identified as key 21st century skills – Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Communication.

Children need to be engaged to learn.STEM is child centered using inquiry based principles, we allow children to take ownership of their learning. As their teachers we can support them in following their passions, we can get creative with our lessons, making them fun and interesting. With STEM we are teaching skills the way they will be used in the real world.
These skills include but are not limited to the following :

~ Teamwork, collaboration and communication.

~ Students have the freedom to thinking critically, creatively and to be innovative.

~ Opportunities are provided for students to fail and try again in a safe environment.

~ The value of failure as a learning opportunity is emphasized and mistakes are embraced not penalized.

Kinder began implementing this program last year as part of our centers. Grades are mixed giving older students the opportunity to be a leader. We built boats out of aluminum foil to tests capacity and our engineering skills. We explored the Earth’s orbit around the sun and the changes in the sky between day and night using water coloring paintings. And much much more! We are expanding this program to the primary grades this year, making it the corner stone of our math and science curriculum
A New Look for Our Classrooms; Collaborative Learning
Our classrooms have a new look as well as a new feel. We are using collaborative learning in the classrooms and have done away with the individual desks that set students apart from one another. With the round desks, the students work as a team, helping each other and learning from one another. It encourages participation in all students as well as promotes confidence and well being. Collaborative learning encourages the development of critical thinking skills as well as enhances social skills and interaction, and transfers specific subject knowledge and skills.
